Mr. Meek Plays Polo by Clifford D. Simak

Oliver Meek, a mild, bookish pilot, arrives at a remote Saturn outpost expecting only a ship repair and instead finds himself stranded in a rough frontier world of drifting rocks, improvised machinery, and baffling local customs. A sign advertising that a mechanic can "fix anything" shares the settlement with rumors of "educated bugs," and before long Meek is drawn into the strange life of the Inner Ring, where Gus Hamilton keeps a colony of intelligent rock-bugs and insists their mysterious behavior may conceal something far more remarkable than anyone suspects. As welfare worker Henrietta Perkins tries to replace old feuds with wholesome competition, the outpost's rivalries erupt into a system-wide obsession with space polo. Meek is abruptly identified as the "expert coach" for Sector Twenty-three, then trapped into wagering his own spaceship and, when Gus is incapacitated, into playing despite knowing almost nothing about the game. The result is a comic scramble of sportsmanship, bluffing, and danger as Meek pilots a battered ship through a violent match while discovering that the bugs have not been playing games at all—they've been solving equations. In the end, frontier humor, speculative mystery, and reckless competition collide in a delightfully chaotic Saturnian adventure.
