Tang-Song Chuanqi by Arthur Peng

*Tang‑Song Chuanqi: A Collection of Tang and Song Tales* is the definitive English translation of China’s earliest mature short fiction, compiled by the legendary modern Chinese writer and scholar Lu Xun. Regarded as the most authoritative anthology of classical Chinese tales, this volume brings together forty‑five carefully restored stories from the Tang (618–907) and Song (960–1277) dynasties — elegant, imaginative narratives known as **chuanqi**, or “transmitting the extraordinary.” Rooted in history, romance, heroism, and the supernatural, these tales blend lyrical prose, psychological depth, and timeless moral insight. Unlike earlier simple ghost stories, Tang chuanqi feature fully developed plots, complex characters, and refined literary art. They explore love and betrayal, fate and justice, dreams and illusions, loyalty and vengeance, as well as encounters with spirits, fox‑fairies, dragons, and wandering immortals. Song tales shift toward realism and historical reflection, balancing emotion with quiet virtue and human drama. Among the masterpieces are beloved classics: *The Tale of Li Wa*, a redemptive romance of resilience and second chances; *The Tale of Huo Xiaoyu*, a tragic story of love and social betrayal; *The Tale of Liu Yi*, a mythic adventure of a scholar and a dragon‑princess; *The Governor of Nanke*, a sharp satire on ambition and worldly vanity; *The Tale of the Curly‑Bearded Hero*, a foundational knight‑errant tale of destiny and heroism; *The Tale of Everlasting Sorrow*, the timeless romance of Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei; and *The Departed Soul*, an ethereal story of love transcending life and death. Lu Xun did not merely select stories — he rescued them. Before his 1927 edition, centuries of corruption, abridgment, and misattribution had distorted these texts. Drawing on rare sources such as *Taiping Guangji*, he restored authentic versions and clarified authorship, preserving China’s golden age of short fiction for modern readers. This translation is crafted for clarity, elegance, and accessibility, preserving the poetic spirit and emotional resonance of the original Chinese without excessive academic notes. It opens a vivid window into medieval Chinese culture, social life, philosophy, and storytelling for English‑speaking readers. For lovers of world literature, classical tales, myth, fantasy, and historical fiction, this collection reveals the beauty, wisdom, and wonder of China’s literary legacy. Rich in drama, romance, mystery, and moral complexity, *Tang‑Song Chuanqi* remains a cornerstone of East Asian literature, influencing later opera, drama, novels, and film. More than a collection of old stories, it is a treasury of human emotion, imagination, and cultural memory — timeless, universal, and unforgettable.
