The Lollard Uprising: The Lollard Knights, Royal Betrayal, and the Hunt for English Heretics

What drives a knight of the realm—a warrior bound by honor, land, and loyalty to the King—to risk everything for a forbidden translation of the Bible?

You know the surface-level history of medieval England: Agincourt, Henry V, and the grand power plays of the Plantagenets. But beneath the heraldry and chivalric propaganda lay a terrifying reality that almost tore the kingdom apart from within. Long before Martin Luther nailed his theses to Wittenberg's door, an English academic named John Wycliffe unleashed a spiritual earthquake. His followers, the Lollards, declared the Pope to be the Antichrist, rejected transubstantiation, and committed the ultimate treason: translating Holy Scripture into the English tongue so commoners and nobles alike could read the truth.

In The Lollard Uprising The Lollard Knights, Royal Betrayal, and the Hunt for English Heretics, historian Winston Maddox strips away centuries of romanticized myth to reveal the raw, violent reality of England's first home-grown heresy. This is not a dry academic text; it is an immersive dive into secret assemblies, courtly conspiracies, and bloody midnight ambushes. You will walk the shadowy corridors of Westminster alongside the Lollard Knights—men of immense wealth and military power who sheltered illegal preachers right under the nose of King Richard II.

Feel the oppressive tension rise as the house of Lancaster usurps the throne, passing the infamous 1401 statute De Heretico Comburendo—authorizing the burning of heretics at the stake. Trace the tragic arc of Sir John Oldcastle, a heroic soldier and personal friend of Prince Henry, who chose his illegal faith over royal favor. Follow Oldcastle's daring escape from the Tower of London and his desperate 1414 midnight plot at St. Giles' Fields, where armed heretics gathered under cover of darkness to kidnap Henry V and force a spiritual revolution.

Written specifically for the discerning history reader who demands rigorous historical accuracy matched with vivid, cinematic storytelling, this book recreates the sights, sounds, and terror of Plantagenet England. You will smell the woodsmoke of the stakes at Smithfield, hear the clashing steel of royal cavalry hunting fugitives through the Welsh Marches, and read the actual words that sent men and women to the flames with their translated Bibles tied around their necks.

Can a kingdom survive when its deadliest enemies are the very knights sworn to protect it?
