Second Sight by Alan Edward Nourse

Amy Ballantine's journal begins with the return of Lambertson, her protective mentor, from a grim trip to Boston, and Amy's mind-reading gift immediately tells her how much he has endured: exhaustion, anger, and defeat. Beneath the surface of his brief account lies a struggle over her future, with Dr. Custer and the cold psychiatrist Aarons pressing for further study while Lambertson insists Amy is still a child, not a specimen to be hurried or exploited. As Amy pieces together the confrontation, she recalls Aarons from an earlier, painful encounter and fears that the extraordinary abilities that set her apart may be treated as a defect rather than a gift. Yet Lambertson's news also carries a fragile possibility: Dr. Custer wants to examine her, but offers no clear explanation for her condition and no promise of a cure. Caught between scientific scrutiny and personal loyalty, Amy faces a tense coming-of-age reckoning in which her expanding psychic awareness becomes both her strength and her burden.
