What She Took From Me by Taylor K. Red

In the kingdom of Virel, memory is power, and those who control it have learned that the easiest way to bury a truth is to erase the memory of those who lived it. Crimes can disappear, betrayals can be rewritten, and entire pieces of a person's history can be removed beneath the careful authority of a kingdom that has convinced its people that forgetting is simply another form of order.

Elara has spent years learning to live with the strange emptiness inside her, accepting the gaps in her past because everyone around her seems to accept them as well. She knows that something important is missing from the story of her life, something that should have left a wound deep enough to remember, yet she has never been able to determine what was taken from her or why. In Virel, there is always an explanation for what has been forgotten, and questioning those explanations can be far more dangerous than accepting them.

Then she meets a woman she has no reason to know, and everything Elara has learned about her own mind begins to unravel. There is no memory connecting them, no name waiting to surface, and no rational explanation for the overwhelming reaction that takes hold of her the moment their eyes meet. Her body recognizes something her mind cannot reach, leaving her trapped between fear, hatred, and an inexplicable pull toward someone who looks at her as though she is carrying the answer to a question Elara has never been able to ask.

The woman remembers her.

She remembers what Elara cannot, and the quiet grief in her eyes makes it clear that whatever once existed between them was important enough to be deliberately destroyed. As fragments of the past begin to emerge through moments that should mean nothing, Elara is forced to confront the possibility that the most important part of her life was not lost by accident, but taken from her by someone who knew exactly what it would cost.

Now, as the truth buried beneath Virel's perfect silence begins to surface, Elara must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to recover the memories that were stolen from her. Because some things can be erased without ever truly disappearing, and some connections survive even when every memory of them has been torn away.

What was taken from Elara, and why was this woman willing to let her forget?

And when Elara finally remembers the truth, will she still recognize the life she was meant to have?
