Mistake Inside by James Blish

James Blish's Mistake Inside opens with a jarring slip between realities: a cat, a bewildered man in a tuxedo, and an astronomer named Dr. Hugh Tracy are swept into a world where time, magic, and politics collide. Furious over his wife's suspected lover, Hugh is suddenly transported from his modern life into Outside, an Elizabethan-looking city where newspapers, horse traffic, and visible sorcery coexist, and where arrivals from other worlds are treated as ordinary. There he learns that Jeremy Wright, the man he has been hunting, is linked to Yero, the hated ruler who appears each fall as part of a strange cycle of displacement and correction. As Hugh searches for a way home, he encounters magicians, astrologers, and local customs that seem at once comic and ominous. He is told that his Atavars—symbolic counterparts shifted across time—must be understood before he can return, and that the cat tied to his own mistake is the key. Beneath the dreamlike absurdity, the story becomes a tense blend of fantasy, theology, and psychological mystery, leading Hugh toward a devastating recognition about his wife, his jealousy, and the true shape of his error.
