Address of President Roosevelt (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by Theodore Roosevelt

Delivered in Cairo, Illinois, on October 3, 1907, this forceful presidential address opens by speaking directly to the men of Illinois, Kentucky, and Missouri before widening into a national argument about leadership and reform. Theodore Roosevelt makes the case that the federal government must exercise firm, intelligent control over the railroads, much as it regulates the national banks, to protect the public, preserve fair competition, and curb the abuses of speculators and manipulators. He insists that honest business will thrive under oversight, and that regulation is not a threat to prosperity but the safeguard that makes prosperity possible. Beyond railroads, Roosevelt defends the need for new methods in a rapidly changing America, praising the "wisdom of hope" over blind dependence on experience alone. Blending practical politics with moral urgency, he presents constructive reform as the best defense against unrest, radicalism, and social breakdown.
