A Cathedral Courtship by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin

A Cathedral Courtship is a witty, affectionate travel romance in which a young American woman's tour of England becomes an increasingly comic and romantic pursuit. Kitty Schuyler, traveling under the watchful eye of her formidable Aunt Celia, records cathedral towns, inns, trains, and sightseeing mishaps with lively humor, sharp observation, and a diary-like voice that turns everyday travel into social comedy. At Winchester, Salisbury, Wells, and Bath, her efforts to absorb architecture, manners, and "improving" lessons are repeatedly interrupted by confusion, embarrassment, and chance encounters with Jack Copley, a polished young artist whose admiration grows through a series of playful rescues and slyly exchanged glances. As Kitty and Jack spar over independence, propriety, and the practical difficulties of traveling as a woman, the story blends romance, gentle satire, and affectionate commentary on cathedral-hopping tourism. The result is a charming courtship story rich in humor, intelligence, and warm feeling, where the sights of England gradually give way to the delight of two people discovering each other.
