THE RED SHIRTS

The Story of Holly Wells, Jessica Chapman, and the Soham Murders

On a warm August afternoon in 2002, two ten-year-old girls disappeared from the quiet English village of Soham.

Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman had been together that day, wearing the red shirts that would become one of the most haunting images of a case that shocked Britain. What began as a desperate search for two missing children soon became one of the most closely followed murder investigations in modern British history.

As police, volunteers, family members, and the wider community searched for the girls, attention eventually turned toward Ian Huntley, a local school caretaker whose connection to the investigation would prove devastating. The discovery of Holly and Jessica transformed the search into a murder investigation and exposed disturbing failures in the systems designed to protect children.

The Red Shirts follows the case from the girls' disappearance and the enormous search operation through the investigation, forensic discoveries, arrests, courtroom proceedings, and the eventual conviction of Huntley and Maxine Carr. It also examines the Bichard Inquiry and the safeguarding reforms that followed, asking how warning signs were missed and what lessons were learned from the tragedy.

The book also follows the later legacy of the case, including the death of Ian Huntley in prison in 2026, while keeping the focus where it belongs: on Holly and Jessica, their families, and the lasting impact of their deaths.

This is a narrative true-crime account of a case that changed the way Britain thought about child protection, police vetting, institutional responsibility, and the devastating consequences of failures that can remain hidden until it is too late.

The Red Shirts is ultimately more than the story of a murder investigation. It is the story of two children whose lives were taken, a community forever changed, and the questions that remain about how such a tragedy could happen.
