The Fifth Man by Hyacinthe M. Miller

Kenora Tedesco has finally stitched together a new life. At forty-six, she's a seasoned private investigator. She's got a cozy lakeside home, a second‑chance romance with her boss, former police commander Jake Barclay, and the confidence that comes from surviving betrayal, loss, and reinvention. But peace is fleeting.

Inside a pair of boxes unearthed by her friend Maggie in the family palazzo in Italy are photos, letters and incendiary documents Kenora's mother Bernice kept hidden for decades. A marriage. A life and name she never knew existed. Evidence that the man her mother loved above everything else was reported killed in a plane crash. Kenora's investigative instincts say he may not be dead. If he's alive, the man is her father, and she's not who she'd been led to believe she was.

Guided by cryptic clues and the prophecy of a long-forgotten tea leaf reader, Kenora must decide how far she'll go to uncover her truths. The cost of her international search for answers could be high, threatening not just her safety but the relationships and people she holds most dear. Will she be able to unravel a decades old web of obfuscation, duplicity and family secrets?

Some investigations change the nature of a case. This one will irrevocably change Kenora.
