Penelope's Experiences in Scotland by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin

Penelope Hamilton arrives in Edinburgh with Salemina and Francesca, a sharp-tongued trio whose "triangular alliance" is held together by affection, compromise, and a shared talent for comic self-awareness. From their departure on the Flying Scotsman to their arrival in the haar-veiled city, Kate Douglas Wiggin turns travel into social comedy, pairing practical anxieties about money, lodging, and class with warm banter and quick observations. Francesca's impulsive leadership, Salemina's scholarly steadiness, and Penelope's romantic, slightly exasperated nature create a lively balance as they tour Scotland's capital, admire Princes Street and Arthur's Seat, and fall under the spell of Mary, Queen of Scots, Jacobite songs, and doomed Stuart loyalty. The novel delights in Edinburgh's shifting light, its history-laden streets, and the way Scotland inspires visitors to become more sentimental, imaginative, and teasingly nationalistic than they expected. Tea, hospitality, and encounters with figures like Lady Baird and Susanna Crum deepen the sense of social adventure, while the women's discussions of kilts, pipes, ballads, and "Scottish" poetry mix affectionate satire with genuine admiration. Witty, observant, and romantic, the story celebrates friendship, travel, and the enduring enchantment of Scotland. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
