No Hype, Just Footing by Bryan Adams

Walking seems like one simple action. In practice, it is a continuous relationship among intention, body, balance, and terrain. We adjust our posture, watch for loose gravel, and retain the ability to alter course.

Working with artificial intelligence demands a similar discipline: intellectual proprioception—the steady awareness of where you stand, what has been delegated, and who remains responsible for what happens next.

Most guides to generative AI sell speed, prompts, and breathless promises of total automation. But as soon as conversational interfaces feel natural, our understanding of the machinery falls behind. When does an assistant finish working? Where does sensitive data travel once uploaded? And who answers for the consequences when fluent output influences an institutional or personal decision?

No Hype, Just Footing is not a manual of productivity hacks or temporary model leaderboards. Written from decades of systems thinking and IT leadership, it provides a calm, durable mental framework for working alongside AI as a thinking partner without surrendering your agency or judgment.

Through clear principles and practical reflection exercises, this book unpacks:

•Keeping Your Seat: Master the human-in-the-loop dynamic. Understand why controlling the turn matters, how defining a better question does the lion's share of the work, and why technical systems must never own human intent.
•Choosing How to Work: Move deliberately between modes. Match the cognitive task to the medium—from the open flow of voice capture to the scrutiny of text and the durable commitment of project construction.
•Giving the Work a Home: Why conversational familiarity is not durable possession. Learn when an exchange crosses the threshold into a project, how to prevent conversational history from becoming compost, and why ratification remains a strictly human act.
•Earning Trust in Stages: Navigate the privacy conundrum. Build a trust ladder using synthetic, low-stakes fixtures before exposing intimate realities, and learn why volume alone is never a substitute for true security.
•Returning to the World: Recognize the exact boundary where simulation ends. Discover why the next honest question often cannot come from a model, but must be asked of real people and lived experience.

Grounded, provider-neutral, and deeply humane, No Hype, Just Footing is an essential field guide for professionals, knowledge workers, and independent thinkers who want to use AI to think with them—never to think for them.
