In January 1979 when Eoin Warner was just two years old, an oil tanker exploded in Bantry Bay, killing his father and leaving an enduring loss at the heart of his childhood. In the years that followed, he found solace beyond the garden fence, wandering the fields and hedgerows of West Cork, where nature became his teacher, refuge and guide.

In this beautifully written nature memoir, Warner weaves memory with the wild, recalling encounters with birds, animals and landscapes that offered comfort, enchantment and meaning. From moonlit shores to dew-soaked meadows, each moment reveals how deeply our lives are intertwined with the natural world.

This is not simply a story of loss, but of discovery, wonder and belonging. Rooted in Irish place and language, it invites us to slow down, look closer, and rediscover the quiet magic that surrounds us in nature and the healing it can bring.
