From Notes to Original Argument
A Student's System for Collecting Sources, Synthesizing Ideas, Citing Correctly, and Developing an Academic Voice
You have the articles. You have pages of notes. You may even understand the topic well. Yet when it is time to write, the paper turns into a string of summaries and citations instead of a clear argument.
From Notes to Original Argument shows students how to move from research to writing without losing track of sources, flattening every author into the same voice, or drifting into accidental plagiarism.
This practical academic writing guide gives you a repeatable system for research paper writing, research note taking, source synthesis, and literature review writing. You will learn how to capture source claims accurately, separate quotations from paraphrases, compare conflicting studies, turn note piles into paragraph claims, and cite borrowed ideas where readers can trace them.
Inside, you will learn how to:
- Build a source library that serves the paper instead of becoming another storage problem.
- Take reusable research notes with clear source, thinking, and project layers.
- Paraphrase accurately without patchwriting or distorting an author's level of certainty.
- Synthesize several sources through alignment, contrast, combination, and extension.
- Write literature reviews around debates, methods, concepts, and evidence rather than author-by-author summaries.
- Turn evidence into a claim ladder that gives a research paper a visible line of reasoning.
- Develop an academic voice through judgment, calibrated certainty, attribution, and analysis.
- Handle conflicting evidence, review articles, citation trails, preprints, data, and source quality.
- Audit quotations, paraphrases, citations, references, and AI-assisted work before submission.
The book also includes working templates for source records, thinking notes, relationship sentences, claim ladders, reverse outlines, and a pre-submission source audit.
If you are looking for help with how to write a research paper, academic research, citation and plagiarism, critical thinking for students, or scholarly writing, this book focuses on the stage where many writing guides become vague: the exact transition from reading other people's work to making a defensible argument of your own.
Stop collecting sources without a plan. Start giving each source a job, each paragraph a claim, and each citation a clear place in the argument.
