Traumatic Grief in the Nervous System
Understanding PTSD, Prolonged Grief, Triggers, and Healing After Devastating Loss
By Samuel Mirzakhani
Some losses do more than break your heart. They leave your body braced for danger.
A sudden death. A violent or frightening loss. A suicide, overdose, accident, medical crisis, or other event you cannot stop replaying. You may miss the person desperately while also avoiding reminders, scanning for danger, losing sleep, feeling numb, or reacting to ordinary sights and sounds as though the worst moment is happening again.
That collision between grief and trauma can be confusing. It can also make familiar grief advice feel useless.
Traumatic Grief in the Nervous System explains what may be happening when bereavement becomes tangled with PTSD symptoms, prolonged grief, triggers, dissociation, hyperarousal, guilt, secondary losses, and a shaken sense of safety. Written for readers living through the aftermath of devastating loss, the book combines clear explanation with practical exercises you can use at your own pace.
Inside, you will learn how grief and trauma overlap without becoming the same condition; why sudden, violent, or shocking losses can be harder to absorb; how triggers become linked with places, dates, sounds, smells, and bodily sensations; and why your response can feel physical even when you know intellectually that the danger has passed.
You will also explore ways to rebuild safety, map triggers, identify secondary losses, ask for support, use grounding skills, create trauma-sensitive rituals, work with guilt and forgiveness, reclaim identity, and make room for meaning without forcing a silver lining onto what happened.
The book also examines professional treatment options with careful attention to what the evidence actually supports. It explains the roles of Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, EMDR, grief-focused psychotherapy, medication, Somatic Experiencing, art and music therapy, and trauma-sensitive mindfulness. Strong claims are kept in proportion to the research, so you can distinguish well-supported PTSD treatments from approaches whose evidence is still developing.
Practical sections throughout the book help you move from understanding to action. You will find seven-day reflection practices, grounding exercises, trigger and support maps, safety planning prompts, ritual ideas, values work, narrative exercises, and progress-tracking tools. The goal is not to rush grief or turn recovery into another performance. It is to help you understand your reactions, regain choice, and build a life that can hold both the loss and what comes next.
This book may be especially useful if you:
- grieve someone whose death was sudden, violent, frightening, or deeply distressing;
- experience flashbacks, nightmares, panic, numbness, avoidance, or hypervigilance alongside grief;
- feel trapped between wanting to remember and needing to escape reminders;
- struggle with guilt, anger, identity changes, or secondary losses after the death;
- want a clearer picture of PTSD, prolonged grief disorder, trauma triggers, and available treatments;
- support someone whose bereavement does not fit ordinary expectations about grief.
You do not need a perfect explanation for what happened before you can begin understanding what is happening now.
Traumatic Grief in the Nervous System offers a grounded guide to the place where loss and threat meet, and to the practical work of creating safety, connection, meaning, and room to live again.
