Signal After Shock
A Practical Guide to Virtual Reality, Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, AI, Apps, and Digital Tools for PTSD Recovery
By Amelia Papandreou
PTSD treatment is changing. Virtual reality can bring controlled exposure into the therapy room. Biofeedback can make stress responses visible in real time. Telehealth can connect people to care across distance. Apps, wearables, online communities, neurofeedback, and AI tools promise support between appointments.
The problem is knowing what deserves your attention.
Signal After Shock is a practical guide to the technologies now shaping PTSD support and recovery, written for readers who want clear explanations without hype. It shows what each tool is designed to do, where the evidence is stronger or weaker, what risks are easy to miss, and how technology can fit alongside established professional care.
Inside, you'll explore:
- How PTSD affects memory, arousal, avoidance, sleep, attention, and day-to-day functioning
- How virtual reality exposure therapy works, including pacing, therapist involvement, cybersickness, and real-world transfer
- What heart-rate-variability biofeedback can teach about physiological regulation
- What neurofeedback measures, how training is delivered, and why the evidence still needs careful interpretation
- Where AI mental health tools may help with structured practice, journaling, and between-session support, and where human judgment remains necessary
- How to evaluate PTSD apps, symptom trackers, wearables, telehealth platforms, and online communities
- How privacy, data retention, bias, cost, accessibility, disability, language, and internet access affect whether a tool is truly useful
- How clinicians and patients can discuss technology without turning treatment into a pile of disconnected devices and subscriptions
- How to recognize early warning signs, build a maintenance plan, and decide when a tool has earned a lasting place in your routine
This book also includes practical checklists, seven-day exercises, technology-evaluation questions, support-network planning tools, a glossary, composite decision cases, and a research-backed resource section.
The central idea is simple: start with the problem, then judge the technology. A sophisticated device is valuable only when it solves a defined need, fits the person using it, respects privacy and safety, and produces benefits worth its cost and burden.
That approach matters because digital mental health moves fast. Marketing can move faster than evidence. A tool may sound clinical while functioning like a consumer product. An app can be convenient while collecting information you would never knowingly share. A promising intervention can be worth discussing without being ready to replace established care.
Signal After Shock gives you a framework for making those distinctions.
If you're living with PTSD, supporting someone who is, or working in a setting where trauma and technology increasingly overlap, this guide will help you ask better questions before you download, subscribe, buy, recommend, or begin.
Use technology where it adds something real. Keep people, evidence, safety, and ordinary life at the center.
