Glimpses of Bengal by Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore's intimate letters and diary-like reflections open a window onto his most fertile early years, where poetry, memory, and daily life continually feed one another. In a voice that is playful, self-questioning, and deeply observant, he moves from the fierce beauty of the sea at Bandora and the first stirrings of youth to meditations on creativity, solitude, and the discipline of ordinary duty. Childhood reading, music, homesickness, and dreams of freedom all mingle with his reflections on the making of poems, the burdens of prose, and the quiet dignity of restraint. Set across rural Bengal and along its rivers, these pages are rich with storms, moonlit waterways, birds, fishermen, villages, and changing sandbanks. Tagore records comic domestic scenes, encounters with officials and schoolboys, and moments of hospitality, while also lingering over the lives of boatmen, women at the bathing ghats, and a gypsy settlement living beyond settled order. Classical poetry, especially Kalidas and the Raghuvansa, enters naturally into this living landscape, joining the present to an older imaginative world. The result is a lyrical portrait of nature, art, and human companionship. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
