The Body in Unit 46

In the quiet retirement village of Beacon Point, the days are meant to pass gently — with committee meetings, ferry views, misplaced casserole dishes, and the occasional dispute over visitor parking. But when Valerie Ahern takes a home-cooked meal to the reclusive new resident in Unit 46, she finds his door ajar, his room unnaturally still, and Gerald Finch dead on the sitting-room floor.

Officially, it is cardiac arrest.

Arthur Bennett, a retired detective who has spent eighteen months trying to adjust to the silence of ordinary life, is not convinced. Gerald had arrived under a cloud of secrecy. He barely spoke. He installed a second lock. And by the time Arthur, former forensic accountant Michael Petrov, sharp-eyed treasurer Dorothy Whitcombe, compassionate Margaret Doyle, no-nonsense Helen Petrov, polished Warwick Sinclair, and grieving Valerie begin asking questions, one unsettling truth becomes clear: Gerald Finch was not the man he claimed to be.

Twenty-two years earlier, another name was attached to a collapsed charity trust, vanished money, ruined lives, and a children's home left penniless. Someone at Beacon Point remembers. Someone has been waiting. And someone is desperate enough to ensure the past never speaks.

As the village closes ranks and old secrets surface beneath its tidy gardens, every kindness becomes suspect, every alibi fragile, and every ordinary resident a possible witness — or something worse. Arthur must learn that certainty can be dangerous, that guilt is not always murder, and that justice, when delayed for decades, rarely arrives cleanly.

But the killer remains hidden in plain sight.

And in Beacon Point, where everyone notices everything — just not always soon enough — the deadliest truths are the ones people have spent a lifetime learning how to bury.
