Car Camping in the Wal Mart Parking Lot by C. Lowry

CAR CAMPING IN THE WAL-MART PARKING LOT

Sometimes you don't lose everything. Sometimes you just discover what actually matters.

Emmett never imagined he would become homeless.

He had a house. A wife. A job. A bank account.

Then he walked in on his wife cheating.

Within minutes, Renee has drained their joint accounts, changed the locks, and left Emmett with nowhere to go.

So he does the only thing he can think of.

He drives to Wal-Mart.

One night in the parking lot can't be that bad, right?

Wrong.

Because Wal-Mart after dark is an entirely different universe.

There are rules.

There are regulars.

There are RVs, truckers, security guards, mysterious strangers, eccentric retirees, parking-lot arguments, questionable bathroom etiquette—and an entire underground society of people who know exactly which spaces are safe, which ones aren't, and how to survive the night without getting towed.

Emmett's first mistake is thinking he's just passing through.

His second is assuming the people living out there have nothing to teach him.

As one ridiculous night turns into another, Emmett finds himself pulled into a bizarre community of outsiders, drifters, workers, misfits, and people who—like him—have fallen through the cracks.

There are laughs.

There are disasters.

There are friendships he never expected.

And, eventually, there is something Emmett hasn't felt since his life fell apart:

belonging.

Because sometimes the strangest place can become home.

And sometimes the people you meet when you've got nothing left are the people who help you discover what you still have.
