A Place in the Sun by Stephen Marlowe

A routine distress signal from deep space exposes a nightmare aboard the gleaming starship Glory of the Galaxy: the vessel is locked on a collision course with the sun, and aboard it are the President of the Galactic Federation and his cabinet. In the secretive Hub of the Galaxy, officials scramble for an answer no ordinary system can provide, and the crisis is routed to Johnny Mayhem, a mysterious man whose "elan" can inhabit other bodies. At the same time, lounge flirtation turns to dread when Sheila Kelly learns from Secret Serviceman Larry Grange that the ship's controls are frozen, the lifeboats are useless, and everyone may die within twenty-four hours. As heat and panic spread through the ship, enlisted crewman Ackerman Boone stirs mutiny, while Admiral Stapleton and the President weigh a desperate subspace gamble that may save the ship only at terrible cost. Then Johnny Mayhem awakens inside Larry's body, discovering that he and Larry are sharing the same mind and that the only hope lies in a dangerous rescue. With the ship plunging toward disaster, Larry must choose between fear and sacrifice, and Sheila watches him become a stranger, a hero, and perhaps the last chance for survival.
