Toxic Boss Survival Guide (The Step-by-Step System to Manage Up, Document What Matters, Protect Your Career and Decide When to Stay or Leave) by Sophia Wintringham

Start with the question you have not been asking.

Not am I overreacting. You have been asking that one for months and it has never once produced an answer. The useful question is colder: does this happen to everyone, or only to you? A manager who runs a professional room when you are absent has a problem with you specifically. A manager who treats everyone this way has a problem with managing. Same behaviour, two entirely different responses — and until you know which one you are in, every move you make is a guess.

This book opens with four tests that settle it. Then it stops reassuring you and starts arming you.

Human resources protects the company. That is not cynicism; it is their function.

They can investigate, mediate, reassign, coach, and occasionally fire your boss. They will not advocate for you when your interests and the company's diverge, and they will not act on one incident and one person's word. The threshold at which they move is two documented incidents plus two independent witnesses. Below it you are a data point, not a case — and walking in early is the most common way people lose.

The words "bullying," "harassing," and "toxic" will cost you the complaint you finally file.

Those are conclusions, and conclusions read as opinions. Dates, times, rooms, and verbs read as evidence. There is a difference between a log and a diary, and this book teaches you to write the first one — every entry inside twenty-four hours, factual enough that a stranger reading it six months from now reaches your conclusion without you having stated it.

Do not record him.

Twelve states make it a crime. Even where it is legal it hands your boss the perfect counterattack, and it quietly turns you into a spectator at your own meetings, enduring things you should be interrupting because you are hoping the file catches something good. There is a better instrument, and it is a follow-up email you can send in ninety seconds.

Your boss is a type, and every type has an opposite.

Micromanager, credit thief, gaslighter, humiliator, ghost. More patience is the wrong answer to all five. You get the strategy that defuses each one, fifteen scripts for the moment you are contradicted or blamed in front of others, a protocol for reclaiming the floor when you are interrupted, a way to take your work back without a frontal fight, and the structure for disputing a written review — plus the cases where silence is the stronger move.

Then the harder chapters. How to stay functional while you search, without the job draining you first. The seven signs that mean no strategy will work here and it is time to plan the exit. How to resign, hand over, sit through the exit interview, and keep the reference.

And a last chapter on not carrying any of it into the next role, including the questions to ask in an interview that expose the next one before you sign.

You are not going to win an argument with this person. That was never the plan.

The plan is that you leave on your terms, with your record and your judgement intact.
