Warmth in the Night by John Zhang

Lin Lan’s parents genuinely need more help now, yet they still insist on deciding how they will live. Their adult children have moved farther into lives of their own, and professional roles are passing to younger hands. Lin Lan and Cheng Ye face a harder question than how to care for the people they love: when care no longer means taking over, home is no longer a single address, and value can no longer depend on being needed, what does it mean to keep choosing one another? Warmth in the Night: Volume Four — Distant Lights follows a family through caregiving boundaries, relocation, slower time, and succession. Lin Lan’s parents choose their own new home and retain authority over medical and everyday decisions. Zhou Yao and Cheng Yu continue building independent lives. The old cinema and the couple’s professional identities learn to continue without them at the center. Among spare keys, an old house number, four-o’clock kitchen light, winter walks, and windows glowing at a distance, Distant Lights is a literary romance about intimacy without control, usefulness without authority, and connection that can survive distance—even when the light itself briefly goes dark.
