The Sampo (Restored Classics to Go Edition)

The Sampo retells an ancient Northland legend in the spirit of the old songs, weaving folklore, magic, and heroic longing into a vivid tale of the Frozen Land. At its heart stands Dame Louhi's household, where the beautiful and tireless Maid of Beauty proves the true strength of the home until a cry from the sea brings the shipwrecked minstrel Wainamoinen to shore and into the story's fate-driven current. Louhi welcomes the legendary wizard warmly, but he cannot forget his own country. To win his release, he promises to bring the master smith Ilmarinen to forge the wondrous Sampo, a source of wealth and power that becomes the prize of the tale. Wainamoinen's return is marked by a failed courtship of the Maid of Beauty, whose riddling demands and impossible challenge end in his injury and a humbling lesson in human frailty. Wounded and fevered, he is healed by a wise Graybeard and his son, whose herbal and magical cures restore both body and hope. As the quest gathers force, Wainamoinen meets Anniki, the maid of the morning, whose wit and command of the winds expose his evasions and draw an honest confession of his plan to win the Maid of Beauty and carry her away. Her warning to Ilmarinen ignites the final tension, setting love, rivalry, and the fate of the Sampo on a collision course.
