Straight Crooks (A Detective Story)

In the bustling metropolis of New York, the Practical Scientific Reform Association stands as a peculiar temple to adventure, founded by the renowned criminologist Woodbury Newcomb. When Newcomb and his wealthy bride vanish on a global wedding tour, the institution's stability rests upon its three reformed pillars: William Harris, Jack Pinney, and Frank Gleason. These men of questionable pasts now manage confidential affairs for the city's elite, but their uneasy peace is shattered by news of their patron's alleged capture by Chinese bandits.

As anxiety ripples through the association, Jack Pinney encounters Holden Terry Burgoyne, a reckless young heir carrying a mysterious candy box that conceals the famed Burgoyne pearls. What begins as a chance meeting over mint juleps quickly spirals into a web of deception involving a shrewd legal guardian, a defiant young heiress, and a suspected conspiracy to defraud the state of an inheritance tax.

With the association's future hanging in the balance and old criminal instincts stirring, the reformed men must navigate a treacherous landscape of half-truths and hidden agendas. The case of the Burgoyne pearls becomes a test of loyalty, greed, and the fragile facade of respectability that holds them all together.
