The Lesser Bourgeoisie by Honoré de Balzac

Honoré de Balzac's The Lesser Bourgeoisie opens with a brilliant satire of Parisian middle-class life, where property, manners, and ambition conceal a constant struggle for power. Against the backdrop of a city being remade by speculation and profit, Balzac mourns the disappearance of old Paris and the private homes that once embodied bourgeois independence. At the center stands the Thuillier house, a once distinguished townhouse now divided into rented rooms, cluttered interiors, and uneasy social tiers, its faded grandeur mirroring the moral compromises of the world within. Balzac traces the family's rise from humble origins through bureaucracy, obedience, and calculated mediocrity. Jérôme Thuillier, the son of a porter, survives by being harmless and useful, while his sister Brigitte, the true force of the household, sacrifices her own prospects to manage property, status, and family strategy. Around them gather tenants, visitors, and schemers, including the elegant Hungarian Countess de Godollo, whose refinement and influence reshape the household and expose the vanity behind its respectability. With comic precision and moral bite, Balzac turns domestic life, marriage plans, and social climbing into a vivid study of hypocrisy, dependence, and the price of success.
