The Land Beyond the Mist by Ernest Haycox

In a relentless Oregon rain, Tom Cameron and a weary emigrant train battle mud, hunger, and homesickness on the final leg of the Barlow Road after months on the trail from Missouri. Near Oregon City, the promised land proves as harsh as the journey that led there: tempers flare, old rivalries surface, and the dangerous Emory brothers threaten to turn camp life into open violence. Cameron's steady courage earns him respect when he stops a bullying confrontation and later defeats Hank Emory in a muddy, humiliating brawl, even as the fight deepens the strain between duty, desire, and survival. When a rough old-timer, Sam Warner, claims to know of a hidden valley with rich land, Cameron seizes the chance to secure a future for the Follett family. But the race for the valley becomes a tense contest of deception, endurance, and frontier justice, with the Emorys closing in and guns ready. In the end, Cameron claims the land, kills Hank when he reaches for his weapon, and helps open a hard-won path toward home, settlement, and the possibility of love.
