The Joy of Living by Hermann Sudermann

In Hermann Sudermann's The Joy of Living, an elegant Berlin drawing room becomes a battlefield where politics, marriage, reputation, and private longing collide. Countess Beata von Kellinghausen, brilliant, persuasive, and quietly suffering, holds the household together even as her husband's campaign advances and Baron Ludwig von Völkerlingk, her husband's political ally and emotional burden, enters a world already thick with rivalry and strain. Around Beata gather figures who expose the fault lines of aristocratic life: the spirited Ellen, the reform-minded Norbert, the conservative Prince Usingen and Brachtmann, and the sharp-tongued Leonie, whose social cruelty masks a deeper grievance. Conversation turns from election intrigue and public slander to dueling, duty, and the fading authority of old class codes. Beneath the polished wit lies a web of sacrifice and resentment, especially in Beata's secret influence over Richard von Völkerlingk's career and her anguished ties to both men and children. As scandal deepens and loyalties shift, the play reveals how love, ambition, and moral conviction are inseparable from public life.
