The Inheritors by Joseph Conrad

A vain, ambitious writer finds his certainties undone on a lonely road from a cathedral city toward Dover, where a striking young woman meets his flirtation with wit, irony, and an unsettling composure. As she claims to come from the "Fourth Dimension," she turns his questions back on him, speaking of a new nation destined to inherit the earth: a colder, harder race without pity, ideals, or reverence, who will outlast sentimental humanity through patience and nerve. Her strange authority, a glimpse of reality shifting around the cathedral city, and her casual display of power leave him torn between desire, dread, and the humiliating sense that he has encountered either a madwoman or a prophet. The encounter becomes a satirical and mystical vision of invasion, ambition, and the future's remorseless logic. Elsewhere, the narrator moves through the literary and political world of salons, newspaper offices, and opera houses, where Callan, a polished former rogue turned celebrated novelist, draws him into schemes of fame, publishing, and influence. He writes feverishly for the press, meets a powerful Duc, and dines among diplomats and correspondents, all while feeling the precarious excitement of a man trying to matter. A mysterious woman reappears in glittering society, seeming to claim him from afar, while a critical article and a sleepless night deepen his self-doubt. Across these scenes, the novel blends social satire, journalistic intrigue, and visionary unease into a portrait of a world poised between vanity and upheaval.
