The Iron Pincers by Eugène Sue

In thirteenth-century France, Eugene Sue's The Iron Pincers, also known as Mylio and Karvel, launches a sweeping historical drama of persecution, corruption, and resistance. Framed by Mylio the Trouvere's perspective, the novel contrasts the glittering excesses of courtly life with the moral ferocity of the Albigensian Crusades, exposing the cruelty directed at the oppressed and the spiritual hypocrisy behind power. It opens in Marphise's lavish orchard near Blois, where noblewomen lounge over wine, gossip, and flirtation, turning love into a game of wit, rivalry, and deceit. That playful world collapses when the women discover they have all been seduced by the same man, Mylio, and vow revenge. Meanwhile, Mylio himself wrestles with the split between sensual wandering and duty, especially his love for the innocent Florette and his loyalty to his brother Karvel, a physician among the Albigensian "Perfects." As the threat of extermination grows, Mylio resolves to leave his life of intrigue, rescue Florette, and return to Languedoc. Along the way, the novel also honors figures like Countess Giraude of Lavaur, whose charity, courage, and civic devotion embody the humane ideals under siege.
