Beyond The Scoreboard by Naomi J. Mercer

When the final whistle blows, what kind of person is your young athlete becoming? Beyond the Scoreboard is a year-long Christian family devotional created for young athletes and the parents who want sport to shape more than performance. Through 52 Scripture-centered conversations, families explore character, competition, purpose, faith, relationships, responsibility, and the pressures that often follow young people onto the field, court, track, or sideline. Each conversation begins with a biblical passage, connects it to a recognizable sports moment, gives families a clear truth to discuss, and finishes with a practical action and prayer. The 52 readings can be used weekly across a full year or paced around a sports season. Inside, families will explore topics such as: • Handling wins and losses without tying worth to results • Responding wisely when playing time, tryouts, or coaching decisions disappoint • Developing humility, integrity, discipline, leadership, and respect • Building healthier communication between athletes and parents • Protecting rest, school responsibilities, worship, and family priorities • Responding appropriately to bullying, hazing, unsafe behavior, and pressure • Navigating injury, early-ending seasons, and changing expectations • Learning to celebrate teammates without constant comparison • Keeping prayer and faith from becoming guarantees of victory • Defining success by who a person is becoming, not simply what appears on the scoreboard The book also includes dedicated family discussion pages so parents and athletes can slow down, listen to each other, identify pressure, consider appropriate boundaries, and choose one practical action for the week. The objective of Beyond the Scoreboard is simple: help families use sports as a place to strengthen biblical values, deepen communication, develop lasting character, and keep an athlete's identity bigger than a result. The book closes with a Family Season Review that helps families identify the habits, boundaries, support systems, and spiritual practices they want to carry forward. Disclaimer: This book offers Christian reflection and family conversation support. It is not medical, mental-health, coaching, nutrition, safeguarding, or athletic-training advice. Every season is teaching your child something. The question is whether the lessons will be shaped only by scores, pressure, rankings, and playing time, or by courage, humility, truth, integrity, and faith. Do not wait until a painful loss, difficult coach, unfair call, injury, or high-pressure season forces the conversation.
