The Child Beneath the Floor by Celia Vellgrave

When renovations uncover the bones of a child beneath the floor of a former Edinburgh maternity institution, Octavia Rooke expects an old tragedy. Instead, more remains emerge—and the evidence refuses to belong to a single crime.

Some of the children were hidden decades apart. Some appear to have died naturally. Others may never have died when the records claimed they did.

With her knowledge of anatomy, surgical instruments, and the physical mechanics of violence, Octavia begins reconstructing a history someone tried to bury beneath timber and plaster. Mara Venn follows a different trail: vanished mothers, discreet payments, charitable patrons, midwives, servants, falsified identities, and children quietly sent away under borrowed names.

As old registers contradict the bones beneath the house, the investigation reaches beyond the institution into inheritance, respectability, and a secret capable of altering the ownership of a considerable fortune. Someone in present-day Edinburgh has already discovered the truth—and is prepared to make certain it remains beneath the floor.

Yet the deeper Octavia and Mara investigate, the less comfortably guilt can be divided. Illegal acts were sometimes committed to protect vulnerable women. Respectable people concealed cruelty to preserve institutions. Others lied to save children who had nowhere safe to go. And hidden among those compromises is a murder that belongs not to the distant past, but to someone who still has everything to lose.

For Octavia and Mara, the case also raises a more intimate question. Their affair has become something neither can dismiss as temporary. In a society with no easy place for the life they are building, permanence may prove almost as frightening as danger.

The Child Beneath the Floor is Book Three of The Anatomy of Secrets, a gothic Victorian mystery series combining fair-play detection, historical intrigue, morally complex crimes, and an evolving sapphic romance.
