Practical UX & Prompt Writing for AI Products by Evan Hartley

Designing with AI isn't just a modeling problem-it's a UX and language problem.

As soon as you ship a chatbot, AI assistant, or "magic" autocomplete, every word you choose and every prompt you write becomes part of the interface. If those prompts are vague, brittle, or unsafe, your product will be too.

"Practical UX & Prompt Writing for AI Products" gives UX writers, product designers, and non-ML product managers a hands-on toolkit for shaping AI behavior at the interface layer-without needing to become machine learning experts.

Instead of overpromising "prompt engineering secrets," this book focuses on what teams actually need in day-to-day product work: reusable patterns, tested microcopy, and simple ways to validate that your AI-enabled flows are safe, predictable, and understandable for real users.

You'll learn how to:

- Treat prompts as UX, not magic
- Frame large language models as components inside an interface, not oracles
- Translate product goals into explicit AI "jobs" and responsibilities
- Align stakeholder expectations around what AI can and cannot do

- Use a prompt pattern catalog in real projects
- Mix and match task, format, and tone patterns for common product scenarios
- Design prompts for summarization, drafting, rewriting, classification, search assistance, and more
- Layer system, developer, and user messages so they reinforce each other instead of colliding

- Design clear, robust system messages and boundaries
- Write concise AI "job descriptions" that reduce hallucinations and scope creep
- Encode product policies, safety constraints, and brand voice into system prompts
- Handle multi-role setups where the model must switch tasks cleanly

- Craft user-facing prompts that feel natural
- Turn internal prompt logic into simple UI copy users actually understand
- Ask for the right level of detail and context
