The Golden Story Book by L. L. Weedon

From a midnight ride that could save an army to a lone grenadier holding a fort against impossible odds, these tales turn on courage tested at the edge of war. Jean le Grand, the son of a flawed French farmer, must race through the night to warn an English general of a trap after his drunken father betrays a military secret, while the legendary La Tour d'Auvergne defies Austrian forces with nothing but nerve, cunning, and duty. The collection then moves through the rough border world of raiders and tower houses, where Jocelyn and Alison Langley's hawking outing becomes a desperate flight from Black Wat Armstrong's men, and a siege at Langley Tower ends in unexpected mercy when old enmity gives way to honor. In "A Pair of Brave Maids," Joan and Letty Saxilby face danger and secrecy as daughters of an imprisoned lord suspected in a Jacobite plot. Elsewhere, Roger Cary is dragged from shipwreck into the brutal life of the pirate schooner Morning Star before storm and fate carry him home, and young Tommy, a drummer boy, endures a mountain march and waits on a rocky ledge for the battle to begin.
