The Golden Canyon by G. A. Henty

The Golden Canyon bursts with the vivid adventure and moral energy that made G. A. Henty a favorite storyteller for young readers. Drawing on his own experience as traveler and correspondent, Henty turns real landscapes into gripping fiction, blending history, geography, courage, and danger into tales that entertain while quietly instructing. Here, that promise unfolds in two thrilling stories: The Golden Canyon, set in the harsh, lawless American West, and The Stone Chest, which carries the reader into a stark Arctic mystery. In The Golden Canyon, young midshipmen Dick and Tom endure a miserable voyage under a tyrannical captain before being thrust into the rough world of San Diego, where violence lurks behind every dusty street. When Dick is wounded defending a stranger, he is nursed back to health by miners and reunited with Tom, who has defied orders to stay with him. Their gratitude quickly gives way to new danger and opportunity as they join a perilous expedition into Arizona in search of hidden wealth. Maps, murder, buried gold, and hostile country drive the action toward a desperate canyon stand, where teamwork, discipline, and nerve are all that keep the party alive.
