The Curlytops on Star Island by Howard Roger Garis

Ted and Jan Martin, the irrepressible Curlytops of Cherry Farm, are already in trouble before their summer adventure even begins—arguing over a doll, a pet goat, and whatever mischief baby Trouble can invent next. Then Grandpa Martin announces a plan that promises both fun and suspense: a camping trip to Star Island, where the family can enjoy the outdoors, and where a strange blue light seen across the lake suggests that the supposedly empty island may be hiding secrets. Once on the island, the Curlytops' excitement only grows. They visit their friend Hal Chester, play by the river, turn the sitting room into a make-believe campsite, and set off in Nicknack's wagon on errands that end in comic chaos. But the real adventure begins when Ted starts hunting for signs of tramps or gypsies, following broken branches and footprints into the woods. His search leads him to a hidden cave, where he and Jan discover evidence that someone has recently been using it. With Grandpa, lanterns, and plenty of courage, the children face the island's mystery head-on in a lively tale of family warmth, playful humor, and outdoor adventure.
