Your First 10 Handmade Candles by Ashley Kaplan

There is a calm that settles when a candle you made is burning. The light is softer, the scent is yours, and you know you turned wax, wick, and oil into something useful with your own hands. You do not need a workshop or expensive gear to feel it. You need a scale, a thermometer, a pitcher, and the willingness to follow 5 verbs. Melt, scent, wick, pour, cure. This book is not a dump of theory and it is not a promise of perfect factory gloss. It is 10 real projects that build skill as you go, so project 10 feels like a natural next step, not a leap. You start with the classic soy container that teaches everything, then roll beeswax without heat, make wax melts, layer 2 tones, pour tealights, scent a lavender mason jar, decorate a citrus kitchen candle, fade an ombre, wick a wide 2 wick vessel, and finally hand dip tapers. Inside, you will discover:
• A toolkit for $45 to $100 and which $2 to $3 per pound soy to buy first
• Wax, wicks, and fragrance by weight, including why 8% load and 2 minute stir matter
• Safety that makes heat routine, from double boilers to a $10 fire plan
• How to read a melt pool, prevent tunneling, and fix frosting and sinkholes
• Curing 14 days for soy for rich scent and testing before a batch of 20
• Decorating with dried botanicals safely and gifting in mason jars You will learn why a wick too small tunnels and too large soots, why curing beats flashpoint myths, and how a platform bed of wax hiding under a candle matters less than a calm clear counter. Expect to spend under $1 of wax per 8 ounce jar and to reuse tools for 50 candles. Make 1 good baseline recipe, write it down, and bend it with intention. The first candle will look a little handmade, and that is the charm. Light it for 2 to 3 hours the first time and watch the room soften.
