The Women Missing from the History Books by Henry Smith

History class gave you kings, generals, and inventors who all looked the same, and maybe 1 woman as a wife or a footnote. The message was quiet but constant. Women were there, but they did not matter. The opposite is true, and these 16 lives prove it from every continent and century. This is not a book of saints and it is not a book of symbols. It is documented lives with texture, including the hard morally complicated choices. A pirate who commanded 1,800 ships and 70,000 sailors. A pharaoh whose name was chiseled off her own temples. A queen who burned Londinium and left a red ash layer still visible under London. An undefeated Mongol wrestler who won 10,000 horses from suitors who could not pin her. Inside, you will discover:
• Zheng Yi Sao, pirate admiral of the South China Sea, who negotiated her own amnesty in 1810
• Hatshepsut, the pharaoh erased for 20 years of peaceful prosperity
• Boudica, Lozen the Apache warrior, and Khutulun the wrestler who never lost
• Stagecoach Mary Fields, 6 feet tall, who delivered mail at 60 through blizzards and gunfire
• Jeanne Baret, first woman to sail around the world in disguise, and Mary Bowser, spy in the Confederate White House Each chapter is short enough for a commute and flagged where the record is uncertain. You will see why a paper bag inventor had to sue to keep her patent and why a child castaway survived 8 months alone on Wrangel Island when 4 men died. Remembering is not nostalgia. It is a correction that widens what every young reader thinks is possible. Read slowly, feel the good ache of discovery, and let these women come home to history.
