You picked up this book because the sea pulls you even when you know what it takes, and you cannot explain why 400 people will board a ship that 1,500 before them never left. You have seen the famous bow of the Titanic in a film and wondered what the other 19 tragedies felt like from the deck when the water came in. Or maybe you stand on a calm river that is only 20 feet deep and cannot picture how 844 people could drown there in plain sight of a city. Whatever brought you here, you share a need to know how deliberate, inspected, carefully built machines disappear in minutes.
This book is not a list of ghost stories told for chills and it is not a technical manual of hull diagrams and knot speeds. It is not a tribute that only remembers the famous and forgets the thousands who died on ships no film ever honored. What you actually need is 20 true voyages, each told from the harbor to the sinking to the hearing room, so you can see the human choice that came before the wave. The pages ahead are that voyage and nothing more and nothing less, 1,000 years of maritime loss that still shapes the rules you sail under today.
Inside, you'll discover:
• The White Ship that drowned 300 nobles in 1120 and plunged England into 19 years of civil war
• Why the Mary Rose listed through open gunports and sank before 500 men in front of a king
• How the Vasa sailed 1,300 yards on her maiden voyage and spent 333 years on the bottom of Stockholm harbor
• The Batavia horror where 125 survivors were murdered on a coral island after the wreck
• The Birkenhead drill that gave the world the order women and children first in 1852
• Why the Titanic carried boats for 1,178 of 2,200 souls and how 30 lives were saved on her sister Britannic 4 years later
• How the Wilhelm Gustloff lost more than 9,000 refugees in the deadliest sinking ever recorded
You will count the dead of the forgotten as carefully as the famous, because the sea does.
