At Unified Healthcare Partners, denied care is called 'cost optimization.' The institutional doublespeak is the setting, not the plot. The plot is what people do inside it.
Code Redacted is the second issue of Scope Creep Press, an unconventional fiction magazine in book form. Three longer stories and three shorter pieces about medical coding and insurance claims under pressure.
A fox senior coder recognizes the hunt—this time he's helping predators stalk vulnerable patients. A crow quality lead hoards grievances against a system that punishes accuracy, then watches a policy change turn her meticulous memory into a weapon. A squirrel claims specialist follows a single code case into a chain reaction of denials that management wants seen in isolation.
The shorter pieces are faster: a mouse intern discovers a code that doesn't officially exist but keeps appearing in denied claims. A meerkat analyst spots a record edited before it was created—fraud disguised as a software glitch. A hamster processor finally escalates a patient's repeated denials, his hoarded records becoming the evidence.
The flagged hospital is St. Vincent's from Critical Hours. The insurer is being sued in Discovery. A coffee shop becomes a quiet exchange point where staff from different institutions compare notes on systemic failures. The web tightens for readers following it.
