The Best Stories of Sarah Orne Jewett by Sarah Orne Jewett

In these New England sketches, quiet country lives are revealed at moments of moral pressure, tenderness, and self-discovery. In "A White Heron," shy Sylvia feels most at home among woods and birds until a charming young hunter arrives, awakening both wonder and unease. When she learns he is searching for the rare white heron she alone has traced, she climbs a towering pine at dawn, sees the bird's secret world, and must choose between human reward and loyalty to the wild. She chooses silence, preserving the heron's freedom. Other scenes turn from nature to the intimate dramas of rural communities: elderly women on a poor-farm trade gossip, wit, and hard-earned dignity as they shell beans and dream of wider horizons; neighbors keep vigil over the dead and remember a life of humble generosity; and two women debate thrift, giving, old habits, church customs, and the politics of change. Across all these portraits runs a deep sympathy for ordinary people, their sacrifices, and the moral weight of small choices.
