How to Identify Biases in the Way You Communicate by Arturo Sepúlveda

What if some of your conversations were not exactly the way you are interpreting them?

We all believe that we see reality as it truly is. However, our minds use past experiences, emotions, expectations, and mental shortcuts to interpret what happens. These filters can silently influence the way we listen to others, attribute intentions, judge behaviors, and formulate our own responses.

In How to Identify Biases in the Way You Communicate, you will discover how certain biases can affect your conversations and relationships without you being fully aware of it.

You will learn to recognize:

• Confirmation bias, which leads us to pay more attention to information that aligns with our existing beliefs.

• Attribution bias, which can cause us to interpret other people's intentions without truly knowing their circumstances.

• The halo effect and the horn effect, which can cause a positive or negative characteristic to influence our overall perception of a person.

• Stereotypes, prejudices, and generalizations, which simplify reality and can become barriers to open communication.

• The availability bias, which can make us consider something more frequent or important simply because we can remember it more easily.

• The negativity bias, which causes unpleasant experiences to have a disproportionate influence on our perception.

• The self-serving bias, which can lead us to justify our own mistakes while judging those of others more harshly.

You will also discover how emotions and digital communication can intensify these processes, especially when we react impulsively, interpret ambiguous messages, or remain exposed only to opinions similar to our own.

But knowing about biases is not enough. This book proposes turning that knowledge into an everyday practice: separating facts from interpretations, identifying the emotions involved, questioning generalizations, seeking information that contradicts our initial conclusions, asking questions before assuming intentions, and learning to observe our own way of interpreting situations.

You do not need to become a completely objective person. You need to learn to recognize the filters through which you are observing.

How to Identify Biases in the Way You Communicate is a practical guide for those who want to better understand others, question their own interpretations, and develop more mindful, clear, and balanced communication.

Because many times, the first step toward better understanding others is learning to question the way we ourselves see the world.
