We Cheated at the Office Then Traded by Alfred Stone

Nicole already had a life that looked finished from the outside. A job she was good at. A boyfriend who lived out of a suitcase. An office that ran on recycled air and the polite fiction that nobody was looking too hard. Then Isaac started looking anyway.

He did not court her. He texted her things that did not belong under fluorescent lights, watched the line of her blouse like it was a problem he intended to solve, and waited for the moment she would stop pretending the heat was only in her head. One morning she wore the wrong color under a thin shirt and the day stopped being theoretical. By lunch they were somewhere the rest of the building trusted was empty. She told herself it would stay a secret. She told herself it would stay a line she could still step back over.
It didn't.

What began as messages across a quiet floor turned into an afternoon she had to walk through with nothing under her skirt and a promise hanging off the end of it. After hours, in a room that still smelled like a meeting, that promise was supposed to belong to two people. Then the main door opened. A coworker. A woman from the floor. A client who had no business still being in the building. The kind of interruption that should have ended the night and instead made it bigger, messier, and impossible to explain later.
