The Spy - The Stopped Watch by Donald Crook

A dead man has Gabriel Vale's name.

There is one problem.

Gabriel Vale is still alive.

When a man collapses at Brussels-Midi railway station, the documents in his pocket identify him as Gabriel Edward Vale. His passport is genuine. His driving licence is genuine. His bank accounts are real. His Belgian residency stretches back decades.

So does his family.

Daniel Mercer knows another Gabriel Vale — the retired British intelligence officer whose name has already survived secrets, disappearances and the machinery of the state.

Then Mercer sees the dead man's watch.

Steel case. Black face. No date window. A scratch between four and five. The hands stopped at 14:47.

It is the original watch once taken from Vale.

The dead man was born Anton Král in Czechoslovakia. Decades earlier, under circumstances buried inside Cold War intelligence records, he was given the identity of Gabriel Vale as part of a protected resettlement arrangement. What should have been an operational construction became something else.

A marriage. A daughter. A career. A home. A life.

Now Anton is dead, and the governments that created his identity must decide what remains legally real.

For Nina Vale, there is nothing theoretical about the question. Gabriel Vale was the man who raised her, taught her to ride a bicycle, argued about buildings and came home every night. For her mother Anne-Marie, he was not a "protected derivative identity" or an administrative consequence.

He was her husband.

As British and Belgian authorities examine the records, probate stalls, bank accounts are restricted and birth records are questioned. A family that has existed for nearly thirty years is suddenly forced to prove that its ordinary life was real.

And the living Gabriel Vale faces a harder question than discovering that his identity was stolen.

If the state gives his name back to him, what happens to the people who spent decades living beneath it?

Mercer, now outside the Service but still carrying its habits, is drawn into a conflict where every attempt to correct the record risks causing another form of harm.

When does a false identity become a true life?

The Spy: The Stopped Watch is the second novel in Donald Crook's literary espionage series, following The Spy: An Unbreakable Name.

Where the first novel explored how institutions can erase identity, The Stopped Watch asks what happens when that identity is reused — and when the borrowed name becomes inseparable from the person who lived beneath it.

Set across Brussels, Leuven, London and Prague, the novel combines Cold War history, intelligence bureaucracy, family memory and legal conflict in a restrained story about state power and human consequence.

At the centre of everything lies the stopped watch.

Once Vale's. Then Anton's. Broken at 14:47 and deliberately left unrepaired.

Because a name can be assigned. A record can be corrected. A passport can be cancelled.

But a life lived for thirty years cannot be made never to have happened.

The Spy: The Stopped Watch is literary espionage about identity, bureaucracy, memory, consent and the quiet violence of administrative power — for readers who prefer moral complexity to gunfights and human consequence to conspiracy.
