Before You Judge by Marc Silver

Why won't he talk about what he's feeling?

Why does he need time alone?

Why does he always try to fix the problem when you just want him to listen?

Why doesn't he notice the things that seem obvious to you?

And when his behavior hurts or confuses you, how do you know whether you're seeing a genuine problem—or interpreting his actions through assumptions he never intended?

Before You Judge is a practical and thought-provoking look at the misunderstandings that develop between men and women in relationships.

Written primarily for women who want to better understand the men in their lives, the book explores the behaviors that are often judged before they are understood. It examines communication, emotional expression, sex, fidelity, independence, respect, love, attraction, compatibility, and the subtle differences between what one partner intends and what the other experiences.

But this is not a book about making excuses for men.

Understanding someone's behavior does not mean accepting behavior that hurts you. Sometimes looking more carefully at a relationship leads to greater understanding. Sometimes it reveals that the problem is more serious than you wanted to admit.

Before You Judge helps you separate what actually happened from the story you may have built around it.

Throughout the book, you'll learn to ask three deceptively simple questions:

What do I know?

What am I assuming?

What else could explain it?

Those questions become especially important when emotions are involved—because relationships aren't lived only through what our partners do. They're also lived through what we believe those actions mean.

From why some men withdraw when they're overwhelmed to why they may show love differently than women expect, Before You Judge looks beneath familiar relationship conflicts and asks readers to consider another possibility before reaching a conclusion.

Later chapters turn the lens toward the relationship itself: the difference between being loved and feeling loved, chemistry versus compatibility, falling in love with someone's potential, and why consistency may ultimately matter more than intensity.

You don't have to excuse him.

You don't have to change him.

And you certainly don't have to stay in a relationship that isn't right for you.

But before you decide what his behavior means, make sure you're judging what is actually there.

Because sometimes seeing your relationship differently begins with one simple act:

Before you judge, understand.
