What Will He Do With It? (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by Edward Bulwer Lytton Baron Lytton

In Gatesboro', Mayor Josiah Hartopp is shaken by the shame of being "taken in," while a desperate one-eyed stranger, Waife, storms his office demanding the child he believes has been stolen from him. What follows is a tense collision of law, conscience, class prejudice, and a father's love, as Hartopp insists he acted honorably in surrendering Sophy to her lawful father, and Waife struggles between fury, suspicion, and grief. Forced to accept the returned money, he leaves with wounded dignity, still haunted by the mysterious woman and by Sophy's fate, even as he tries to imagine a humbler future as a basketmaker for the sake of his grandchild. Meanwhile, the story widens to the bustling world of Humberston race-week, where the embittered Mrs. Arabella Crane watches public merriment with a heart hardened by envy and revenge. The procession stirs old memories, especially when Lady Montfort's beauty and compassion briefly pierce her bitterness. Against this backdrop, Jasper Losely blazes through theatres and taverns as a charming rogue, draining friends, chasing widows, and plotting fresh schemes of money and marriage. His confidence, like the town's glittering society, conceals a world of debt, exploitation, and moral decay. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
