Unto This Last by John Ruskin

John Ruskin's Unto This Last and Other Essays on Political Economy is a passionate rebuke of economics as mere money-making and a call to treat wealth as a moral trust. From the outset, Ruskin insists that political economy is not a specialist's puzzle but a civic duty, one that every responsible reader must understand if society is to prosper justly. He redefines economy as the wise stewardship of labor, resources, and time: work should be directed rationally, its results preserved carefully, and its benefits distributed at the right moment for the common good. Across these essays, Ruskin attacks the false logic of greed, competition, and unfair wages, arguing that true value includes skill, intellect, feeling, and character, not market price alone. He defends just compensation as honest exchange, warns that poverty is deepened by oppression and overcrowding, and rejects any system that separates prosperity from righteousness. Extending his argument to art and government, he portrays genius as a rare resource to be discovered and used wisely, and society itself as a household requiring disciplined authority, duty, and shared responsibility.
