Two Poets by Honoré de Balzac

In Balzac's vivid Angoulême, the old printing house becomes a battleground where family loyalty, commerce, and social change collide. Jérôme-Nicolas Séchard rises from illiterate laborer to shrewd provincial printer through Revolution-era opportunism, then hardens into a miserly, drink-soaked businessman determined to wring the best price from his own son, David. David, by contrast, is intelligent, disciplined, and idealistic, trained in Paris and committed to honest craft rather than profit. Their bargaining over the presses, type, and equipment turns a local sale into a sharp conflict between old methods and new technology, tradition and progress, instinct and intellect. Balzac renders the cluttered shop and shabby household with comic precision, while exposing the moral cost of avarice and compromise. As David takes on the burden of the business, the novel deepens its portrait of provincial life, economic struggle, and the painful passing of power from one generation to the next. Around them, Lucien's rising hopes in love and society, Eve's quiet dignity, and David's self-sacrificing friendship add tenderness and tension to this richly observed tale of ambition, family, and ambition's price.
