Under Wellington's Command by G. A. Henty

Under Wellington's command, Terence O'Connor—once a mischievous boy, now a daring young officer—rides through the brutal, shifting world of the Peninsular War. From the retreat to Corunna and Massena's hard-fought withdrawal at Pombal, Redinha, and Foz d'Aronce to the victories at Talavera, Fuentes d'Onoro, Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, and the bold dawn seizure of Coimbra, the novel follows campaigns where courage, intelligence, and endurance matter as much as cannon and cavalry. Terence earns distinction by leading irregular Portuguese troops, outwitting French forces, and helping sever their communications through guerrilla raids, surprise attacks, and relentless rear-area pressure. Against the shadow of Wellington's strategy and the formidable Lines of Torres Vedras, the story traces not only military action but the making of a soldier. Family loyalty, comradeship, rescue, honor, and patriotic resolve shape Terence's fortunes as hunger, captivity, and battlefield peril test him at every turn. Fast-moving and vividly historical, it is an energetic tale of war and heroism. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
