AMERICA IS BECOMING NALANDAIZED by haijian xing

America spent decades moving upward. Steel, aluminum, shipbuilding, manufacturing, and other physical capabilities moved offshore. Labor-intensive agriculture became increasingly dependent on immigrant workers. Technology companies tapped global engineering talent. Finance, management, law, consulting, software platforms, and capital allocation rose toward the top of the prestige ladder. For a long time, the model looked brilliant. Then AI arrived. And AI turned out to be very good at the kind of abstract cognitive work that advanced economies believed was safest. **America Is Becoming Nalandaized** introduces a provocative new concept: **Nalandaization**—the transformation of a resilient, distributed system into a prestigious, highly concentrated, capital-intensive supernode that becomes increasingly dependent on external flows it no longer fully controls. The metaphor comes from Nalanda, one of ancient India’s great centers of Buddhist learning. This book is not a history of Buddhism, nor does it claim that Buddhism caused India’s political decline. India is used as an epistemic case study—a deliberately constructed thought experiment about what happens when intellectual sophistication, institutional concentration, and dependence begin to reinforce one another. The real subject is North America. What happens when a country outsources part of its industrial base but retains finance and management? What happens when immigration becomes an important support layer for both skilled labor and an aging population? What happens when persistent deficits benefit from deep global demand for dollar assets? What happens when the most prestigious careers move farther away from steel mills, shipyards, farms, machine shops, and physical production? And what happens when AI begins automating the very cognitive layer that the system kept at the center? The danger is not globalization itself. It is not immigration. It is not finance. It is not large institutions. The danger begins when a system combines high fixed costs, concentrated capability, weak distributed replication, and dependence on external flows—and gradually loses the cheap backup systems that once allowed it to recover. A begging bowl can be replaced tomorrow. A civilization-scale campus cannot. This book examines the implications for companies, workers, investors, policymakers, the United States, and Canada. It asks readers to rethink talent, ownership, industrial capacity, AI, immigration, sovereign debt, professional prestige, and national resilience through one simple question: **If the center disappeared tonight, what could restart tomorrow morning?** Because Nalandaization is not merely failure. **It is the risk of irreversible failure.**
