Tom Tiddler's Ground by Charles Dickens

Tom Tiddler's Ground is a festive Dickens tale that turns social awkwardness into comedy, exposing vanity, pretension, and the small absurdities that flare when people gather together. In Dickens's sharp, witty style, a simple encounter becomes a lively satire on pride, status, and the human need for attention, all tempered by seasonal warmth. At sunset, Mr. Traveller leaves the silent Hermit behind and falls into candid conversation with the Tinker, who is mending a villager's pot by the roadside. The Tinker's hard-earned philosophy is plain: weather, labor, and hardship must be accepted as they come, and he resents the Hermit's theatrical misery as an insult to those who truly work and suffer. When he is invited to look at the sleeping Hermit, his judgment only hardens. By the end, the three move off together, joined by a practical, unsentimental wisdom about work, waste, and endurance. The work is presented as a chapter-based Dickens text, with titled sections such as "Picking Up Soot and Cinders," "Picking Up Miss Kimmeens," and "Picking Up the Tinker," while chapters 2 to 5 are noted as not written by Dickens and omitted in this edition. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
